Troubled Los Angeles Medical School Gets Some Good News: It’s Off Probation

July 13, 2011, 10:05 pm

The Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, a Los Angeles institution that has struggled financially in recent years, received some good news from its accreditor this week, the Los Angeles Times reported. The accrediting commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges has removed the university from academic probation, a status it imposed in 2009. Drew’s new president, David M. Carlisle, said in a statement that the accreditor’s decision would help the university continue to grow financially and achieve other goals, such as restoring medical-residency programs and expanding enrollment in nursing and other programs.

This is wonderful news. Charles Drew is one of just four historically black medical colleges, which are prime contributors to increasing the numbers of minority health care professionals in the U.S. with Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta and Howard University in Washington. I am glad to see Charles Drew has reversed its bad fortune and is on its way to regaining accreditation – We need institutions like it.

What great news.  This is a university that has been under the radar for some time.  People should really see what Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science has to offer.  It’s an amazing school and I wish them much continued success because they deserve it.
