The Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, a Los Angeles institution that has struggled financially in recent years, received some good news from its accreditor this week, the Los Angeles Times reported. The accrediting commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges has removed the university from academic probation, a status it imposed in 2009. Drew’s new president, David M. Carlisle, said in a statement that the accreditor’s decision would help the university continue to grow financially and achieve other goals, such as restoring medical-residency programs and expanding enrollment in nursing and other programs.
