QuickWire: Colleges Buy Up .XXX Domain Names to Sidestep Pornographers

November 16, 2011, 12:54 pm

Concerned about a soon-to-arrive Internet-address system for pornographers, some institutions are buying up .xxx versions of their domain names to protect their brands. The University of Missouri and Washington University in St. Louis are among those who have taken the precautionary step, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. “We don’t want someone coming across our trademark on a porn site. God only knows what they’d come up with,” Terry Robb, director of information technology at the University of Missouri at Columbia, told the newspaper. Mr. Robb said his institution has also registered missouri.xxx and missouritigers.xxx.

Of course ,if you are .edu, it is a good policy to at least  buy .com  – a very old trick is to put some porn on a .com version of a not for profit’s url and hold the institution’s site for ransom.   A lot of  people type .com by reflex, and end up seeing porn instead of your institutions site.
