Canada’s Department of Human Resources and Skills Development said last week that a portable hard drive containing the personal information of 583,000 student borrowers had gone missing from a Quebec office in November. The incident is the second time in recent months that the agency has faced problems with its handling of personal data: It said last month that a USB drive containing information about 5,000 Canadians had also disappeared. So far, there’s no evidence that the student-borrower data has been used for fraudulent purposes.
