JOB MOVES
Gwendolyn Boyd, executive assistant to the chief of staff of the Applied Physics Lab at the Johns Hopkins University, has been chosen as the next president of Alabama State University. She will succeed William H. Harris, a president emeritus who has been serving as interim president since Joseph H. Silver Sr. stepped down a year ago.
Peter Brews, a professor of strategy and entrepreneurship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will become dean of the University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business on January 16. He will succeed John H. McDermott, who has been interim dean since Hildy J. Teegen stepped down from that post.
Shelley Berkley, a Democrat who served Nevada in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1999 to 2013, becomes chief executive and senior provost of Touro College and University System’s Western Division this week. She will lead Touro’s Nevada and California campuses. She succeeds Michael Harter, who has served in the role since 2008.
Marc Armstrong, a professor of geographical and sustainability sciences and interim chair of the department of cinema and comparative literature at the University of Iowa, has been appointed associate dean for graduate and online education in the university’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He will assume the newly created position on January 15.
Wade Davis, an anthropologist, author, and photographer who has been the National Geographic Society’s explorer in residence since 1999, will join the University of British Columbia in July. He will be a professor in the anthropology department and a research associate with the Museum of Anthropology, and will be based at the Liu Institute for Global Issues. His teaching duties will be for half of each academic year, to allow him to do extensive research and outreach in the field.
Austen L. Parrish, who was interim dean and chief executive of Southwestern Law School, in Los Angeles, became dean of Indiana University at Bloomington’s Maurer School of Law on January 1. He replaces Hannah L. Buxbaum, who became interim dean of the law school after the previous dean, Lauren Robel, became the university’s provost and executive vice president.
Vincent Boudreau, a professor of political science who specializes in Southeast Asian politics at the City University of New York’s City College of New York, became the first permanent dean of the college’s new Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership this month. He takes over from Jeffrey Rosen, who had been serving as interim dean since the school got started last April.
DEPARTURES
Susan Desmond-Hellmann will step down in March as chancellor of the University of California at San Francisco to become chief executive of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Pending approval of the university system’s Board of Regents, Sam Hawgood, dean of the university’s School of Medicine, will serve as interim chancellor until a permanent successor is found.
M. Christopher Brown II stepped down as president of Alcorn State University on December 19, after nearly three years in the role. Norris Edney, a former interim president of Alcorn, assumed the role of acting president.
