College campuses are often quiet over the summer, but the social issues that roiled many of them this past academic year are still in the news. Across the country, activists affiliated with the Black Lives Matter movement are staging demonstrations, and students are taking part to make their voices heard.
Over a period of about two weeks, The Chronicle talked to students at three protests in Washington. Some were home for the summer; others had traveled to the nation’s capital to pursue social justice. All of them made it clear that there is much work to be done to remedy racial inequality, perhaps offering a glimpse of actions that could return to campuses this fall.
