The 31 American universities that are seeking to raise at least $1-billion collected a total of $943.5-million in gifts and pledges during the last month for which they have data available.
The campaign with the largest gain in the last month was New York University, with $126.6-million.
Two new campaigns were announced in November, at Princeton University and at Syracuse University. Princeton entered the public phase of a campaign that began in 2005. The university has raised $600-million so far and aims to reach its goal in five years. Syracuse is seeking $1-billion by 2012. The university has already raised $509.3-million since the beginning of the campaign’s quiet phase, in 2005.
The 31 universities—each with its most recent total, last month’s increase*, the original goal, and the planned completion date—are as follows:
Brown University, $1.102-billion as of October 31 (increase of $56.2-million in the last month); the goal is $1.4-billion by 2010.
The California Institute of Technology, $1.238-billion as of October 31 (increase of $1.3-million in the last month); the goal is $1.4-billion by 2007.
Columbia University, $2.441-billion as of October 31 (increase of $39-million in the last month); the goal is $4-billion by 2011.
Cornell University, $1.828-billion as of October 31 (increase of $91.8-million in the last month); the goal is $4-billion by 2011.
Dartmouth College, $974.9-million as of October 31 (increase of $55.8-million in the last month); the goal is $1.3-billion by 2009.
Indiana University at Bloomington, $659.5-million as of October 31 (increase of $7.8-million in the last month); the goal is $1-billion by 2010.
The Johns Hopkins University, $2.885-billion as of October 31 (increase of $40.2-million in the last month); the goal is $3.2-billion by 2008.
New York University, $2.357-billion as of October 31 (increase of $126.6-million in the last month); the goal is $2.5-billion by 2008.
North Carolina State University, $1.171-billion as of October 31 (increase of $6.6-million in the last month); the goal was $1-billion by 2008.
Princeton University, $600-million as of the public launch of the campaign on November 9; the goal is $1.75-billion by 2012.
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, $1.259-billion as of October 31 (increase of $8.4-million in the last month); the goal is $1.4-billion by 2009.
Stanford University, $3.033-billion as of October 31 (increase of $89-million in the last month); the goal is $4.3-billion by 2011.
Syracuse University, $509.3-million as of the public launch of the campaign on November 2; the goal is $1-billion by 2012.
Tufts University, $699.5-million as of October 31 (increase of $9.3-million in the last month); the goal is $1.2-billion by 2011.
The University of Chicago, $2.027-billion as of October 31 (increase of $22.5-million in the last month); the goal was $2-billion by 2008.
The University of Florida, $544.2-million as of October 31 (increase of $25.1-million in the last month); the goal is $1.5-billion by 2012.
The University of Illinois, $1.213-billion as of October 31 (increase of $30.6-million in the last month); the goal is $2.25-billion by 2011.
The University of Kentucky, $1.07-billion as of October 31 (increase of $7-million in the last month); the goal was $1-billion by 2007.
The University of Maryland at College Park, $431.7-million as of October 31 (increase of $10.6-million in the last month); the goal is $1-billion by 2011.
The University of Miami, $1.354-billion as of October 31 (increase of $16.5-million in the last month); the goal was $1.25-billion by 2007.
The University of Michigan, $2.712-billion as of October 31 (increase of $32-million in the last month); the goal was $2.5-billion by 2008.

Vanderbilt University, $1.424-billion as of October 31 (increase of $11.2-million in the last month); the goal is $1.75-billion by 2010.
Virginia Tech, $590.1-million as of October 31 (increase of $9.1-million since the public launch of the campaign on October 20); the goal is $1-billion by 2010.
Yale University, $1.851-billion as of October 31 (increase of $103-million in the last month); the goal is $3-billion by 2011.
