A British computing pioneer has donated $100-million to his alma mater, the University of Oxford, to finance a new school that will examine problems and opportunities of the 21st century.
James Martin, who received a bachelor’s degree in physics from Oxford’s Keble College in 1955, amassed his fortune by conducting seminars, lecturing, writing, and consulting about information technology. His company, now called Headstrong, is the world’s largest information-engineering consulting firm. He is the author of the 1978 book The Wired Society: A Challenge for Tomorrow (Prentice-Hall).
