Refugee students from war-torn Kosovo are being given scholarships to attend more than 40 private colleges in the United States this fall.
The emergency scholarship program has been organized by the president of Hartwick College, Richard Detweiler, and his wife, Carol. Former Peace Corps volunteers, they were struck by the plight of the refugees who had been brought to the United States, and thought about what small, independent institutions like Hartwick might do to help. The idea they quickly settled on was free tuition and room and board for qualified students among the refugees.
