It Is Time to Create an Open System of Peer Review
Peer review -- the process of placing our work and our careers in the hands of others to evaluate -- is at the center of the academic enterprise. Dissertations, scholarly articles and manuscripts, and applications for tenure and promotion routinely are subjected to scrutiny by other academics. Such peer review, we are told repeatedly, protects intellectual integrity by insuring that high academic standards are maintained, and that inaccurate or shoddy scholarship is weeded out.
