The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights indicated on Friday that it may not identify individual colleges in its forthcoming report on possible discrimination against women in college admissions.
The commission members seemed to agree with that approach at their meeting but did not make a final decision. “The purpose of this report is not to dump on a particular school for what it is doing, but to reveal what is happening,” said Gail Heriot, the member who first raised the issue of gender bias.
Last year the commission subpoenaed admissions data on gender from 19 institutions, four of which have not yet complied: Georgetown University, Gettysburg College, the Johns Hopkins University, and Messiah College. The commission’s general counsel is scheduling meetings with representatives of those institutions and aims to finish the sessions by the end of this week.
