NYU Student Creates Virtual Girlfriend
Drew Burrows came home every night to “an empty bed.” So what did he do? He created a 2-D virtual girlfriend, projected onto his bed using an infrared-sensitive light projection, to cuddle with. The invention was presented last week at New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program Spring Show at Tisch School of the Arts, New York Magazine reports.
The “virtual girlfriend” responds to human movements using an infrared sensor connected to a light projection: “Lie on your back, she snuggles up right next to you in a log position. Curl up in the fetal position, she spoons…Give her kiss on the check and she rolls over and buries her face in the pillow. And yes, she stays fully clothed at all times,” the magazine reports.—Catherine Rampell

Once a nerd, always a nerd!

Well, the tech is interesting, at least.
Still, I don’t see much of point to this. It’s a 2d projection; thus it fails at the stated goal of solving an ‘empty bed’. Once you close your eyes the illusion is gone.
Other than that… this guy should get out from behind the monitor a bit. If he put as much effort into dating as he did into this he would probably have a real girlfriend.

And even after he gets a girlfriend, if he doesn’t care for the way she looks, he can always project a new look over her (as long as she’s in bed, at least).

When we get to the point of faking all our senses…that is when reality is in question.
And it will probably come from someone like Drew.
