Media Company Says It Will Start Social-Networking Sites for Ivy Leaguers

Manhattan Media announced today that it is forming a new division, Ivy League Media, to cater to alumni of the eight Ivy League institutions: Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, Princeton, and Yale Universities, Dartmouth College, and the University of Pennsylvania. The division will create magazines and social-networking Web sites for the institutions’ alumni, and also organize social events.

Manhattan Media, a New York-based publisher of newspapers and magazines, also says it has acquired 02138, a lifestyle magazine for Harvard alumni. Beginning in 2009, the magazine will increase its frequency from quarterly to every other month. The magazine was founded in 2006 by Bom Kim and Daniel Loss, both Harvard alumni.

If the new Web sites prove successful, might they lure Ivy League alumni away from the social-networking site Facebook—even though it got its start as a site exclusively for Harvard students? —Andrea L. Foster

  1. Wait a second, here. I find this all very un-Ivy League. Social networking belongs in the country club bar, the putting green, the yacht club, the croquet course, and the Episcopalian church steps. Next thing you know they’ll abandon Burberry for Lane Bryant!

  2. Yes, a pretty crowded space with more competent contenders in place. Odd.

  3. Ummm… It’s Dartmouth College, not Dartmouth University.

  4. We real members of the elite don’t mind this at all. If you go to some community college (like Harvard or Yale) you need to network. We, of course, don’t worry about this since we already know everyone who matters. (and it’s not you!!!)

  5. Great, now Facebook will be free of the upper crust dones that reinforce the existing status quo and prohibit the use of social networking sites for real social change… Or it will at least be easier for me to score in a game Scrabble with strangers…

  6. But, you see, we like the status quo. It works for us. We are the last bastion of western civilization.

(and, we might add, spelling — drone is spelled D-R-O-N-E.

  7. Real members of the elite don’t know how to punctuate sentences ( at least this kind.) Western civilization is clearly declining and falling.

  8. Actually, the missing “)” was deliberate. It’s part of our secret code that we use to plot world domination.
