Pre-Litigation Notices for All!

The Recording Industry Association of America is kicking off the new school year with a bang: The trade group announced today that it has sent pre-litigation notices to 503 piracy suspects at a whopping 58 different colleges.

For much of this year, the recording industry has sent out batches of the notices to different institutions every month. But the previous batches were only delivered to about 20 colleges at a time. With this month’s letters, the RIAA is casting a much wider net. —Brock Read

  1. Even if they win, it will be a Pyrrhic victory. This is a fight the RIAA can’t win. Copyright is a blip on the horizon, historically, and all the signs say it’s on its way to becoming just another footnote in the history books.

  2. There’s a lot of money backing the RIAA and a strict view of copyright. Even if they lose eventually, they can cause a lot of grief to higher ed and others before that happens.

  3. OK, Daren, I’ll buy it, but would you please explain some of the “signs” you mention.

  4. Here’s a sign of the end of this form of property, if you can read it: bittorrent.

  5. Ok, for all of those posting here who are academics seeking tenure and promotion eventually to secure your futures, how do you propose to get there without publishing (remember “publish or perish”?), and how do you suppose scholarly publishers are going to survive without copyright protection? Eventually, with no job security, how many teachers will stay in academia to instruct the college students who are enjoying their P2P freedom to get something for nothing? Sooner or later, these students will get nothing for nothing because they will have no professors, at least in research universities, to teach them!
