"Some college administrators seem so distracted with fund raising, academic infighting, and community initiatives that they set up their emergency communications departments very poorly. Training is poor to nonexistent, secretaries are pressed into service with tremendous responsibilities for running 'notification systems' 24/7 and on weekends because no one else knows how to do it and the administration won’t pay for additional staff. Procedures are seat-of-the-pants and dependent on HIPPO (highest paid person’s opinion), except when something like Virginia Tech happens and there is some sort of scramble to do something different." --Donna Most Colleges Avoid Risk Management, Report Says

Prior days' news: By date | Search This week's print issue Back issues: By date | Search November 25, 20082 Students at U. of Maryland-College Park Were on Terrorism Watch ListTwo student activists at the University of Maryland at College Park were among 53 people put on a terrorism watch list by the Maryland State Police from 2005 to 2007, the university’s student newspaper, The Diamondback, reported this week. According to newly released police documents cited by both The Diamondback and the Associated Press, the students were being watched because they belonged to the campus branch of the International Socialist Organization and attended a 2005 campus event opposing the death penalty that was co-sponsored by the group. The documents reveal that the police were tracking the students — Shane Dillingham, a doctoral student in Latin American studies, and Laura J. Lising, a postdoctoral student and lecturer in physics — “in the event the group engages in criminal activity while involved in their protest activities.” Recent revelations about the watch list — including its existence, who was on it, who authorized its creation, and what use was made of it — have caused an uproar in Maryland. Although neither of the students faced repercussions for being on the watch list, they now say they worry that the episode could have a chilling effect. “The government is compiling information on people, not because of what we’ve done, but because of our ideas,” Mr. Dillingham told The Diamondback. “Are students going to want to go organize if they think their name is going to be added to a terrorist watch list?” —Caitlin Moran Posted on Tuesday November 25, 2008 | Permalink |Comments

Fight! Change does not accur without a fight.

Outrageous. I’m glad this is coming to light and I agree that this needs to be fought.

Debra and Elizabeth, you’ve just been added to the watch list.
— SM Nov 26, 09:25 AM #
I assume I’m already on the watch list, but if I’m not, put me on there too. Ridiculous.

Why aren’t WE on the list?

It’s so funny that we call other countries, like Russia, China, Iran, etc, “police states,” but think of ourselves as the world’s “beacon of democracy.”

Outrageous.

Funny, you all are willing to fight for your rights here in the states, but are unwilling to help others fight for their basic rights somewhere else…. just food for thought.

Alamo, in one statement you both managed to tar every respondent with the same brush and to make a huge assumption based on no facts whatsoever. Try to apply a more rigorously academic approach to your next post.

There’s a difference between helping others fight for their basic rights and forcing others to govern themselves as we see fit.

The Maryland State Police are now on my terrorism watch list.

Does the University of Maryland consider post-docs to be “students”? I would have thought that their status was comparable to residents in medicine/surgery, who formally lost the ‘student’ designation some years ago.
