"Some college administrators seem so distracted with fund raising, academic infighting, and community initiatives that they set up their emergency communications departments very poorly. Training is poor to nonexistent, secretaries are pressed into service with tremendous responsibilities for running 'notification systems' 24/7 and on weekends because no one else knows how to do it and the administration won’t pay for additional staff. Procedures are seat-of-the-pants and dependent on HIPPO (highest paid person’s opinion), except when something like Virginia Tech happens and there is some sort of scramble to do something different." --Donna Most Colleges Avoid Risk Management, Report Says

Dr. Traber agreed to step down on December 1 and will serve as president emeritus, professor of medicine, and a consultant to the board. The trustees did not provide reasons for their decision, but the Chronicle reported that “highly placed sources” had cited “seemingly endless turmoil and shaky finances” at the medical school, which is not connected with Baylor University. “I wouldn’t put all the blame on Dr. Traber,” Bob Allen, chairman of the trustees, said after the meeting. “The challenges out there are a result of lots of decisions over the past 10 years. I’d blame the board, of which I was one, as much as Dr. Traber.” The private medical school split with Methodist Hospital and has struggled to build its own teaching hospital. It is negotiating a possible merger with Rice University. The board will pay Dr. Traber about $4.5-million to buy out the rest of his contract, which runs through 2013. Dr. Traber, who has been president since 2003, was not available for comment. —Katherine Mangan Posted on Thursday November 20, 2008 | Permalink |Comments
