Davenport U. President Apologizes for Drunken-Driving Arrest
Randolph K. Flechsig, president of Davenport University, in Michigan, has apologized for his arrest last week for suspected drunken driving. Mr. Flechsig initially blamed a diabetic reaction for his alleged erratic driving, The Grand Rapids Press reported. But the police said on Tuesday that Mr. Flechsig’s blood-alcohol level was above the legal limits.
“My decision to drive was a very poor choice,” Mr. Flechsig, 51, said in a written statement issued today, adding that he was “sorry for jeopardizing the trust of faculty, staff, students, and everyone who supports our university.”
The newspaper posted a police video of Mr. Flechsig’s arrest, in which he refuses a preliminary breath test and struggles with two dexterity tests.
According to the police report, Mr. Flechsig was arrested on the afternoon of Sunday, September 21, after a witness said that Mr. Flechsig’s Porsche convertible had been racing with a truck and had forced her off the road. The president then drove to the home of an unnamed 27-year-old Davenport admissions officer, where he was arrested, the newspaper reported.
Mr. Flechsig pleaded not guilty and faces an October 17 court date. The chairman of Davenport’s governing board has said that he plans not to act on the matter until after the court proceedings. —Paul Fain
