"Some college administrators seem so distracted with fund raising, academic infighting, and community initiatives that they set up their emergency communications departments very poorly. Training is poor to nonexistent, secretaries are pressed into service with tremendous responsibilities for running 'notification systems' 24/7 and on weekends because no one else knows how to do it and the administration won’t pay for additional staff. Procedures are seat-of-the-pants and dependent on HIPPO (highest paid person’s opinion), except when something like Virginia Tech happens and there is some sort of scramble to do something different." --Donna Most Colleges Avoid Risk Management, Report Says

California is the only state in the nation that has still not agreed on a budget for the current fiscal year. Without a budget, the state will withhold money for Cal Grants from as many as 86,000 community-college students, which could lead some of them not to enroll, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The University of California and California State University systems have said they will front the grant money to low-income students. But a majority of the community-college system’s 110 campuses cannot afford to do that, and some of their students may be left without enough money to start the academic year. “Given that these are the state’s neediest students who rely on these funds to buy books and bus passes and make other critical beginning-of-the-semester purchases, it’s a certainty that the lack of a Cal Grant payment acted as a barrier to some students’ coming back to school,” Erik Skinner, the community-college system’s vice chancellor for fiscal policy, told the San Francisco Chronicle. Some campuses are attempting to relieve the problem by processing Pell Grants and other financial aid more quickly, according to the Chronicle. But officials on some campuses said their hands were largely tied until a state budget was passed. —Josh Keller Posted on Thursday September 4, 2008 | Permalink |Comments

Please, please, please, no new or raised taxes! The gas prices are enough pain to bear. Higher taxes will force us out of the state!! Please cut spending and give-aways to illegals, who don’t carry their fair burden, instead.

Too many pleas like those of #2 come from people living in 3500 sq homes with three car garages filled with BMWs and SUVs…If both parties got serious they could protect those in need and tax the conspicuous consumers, but there are those who would rather see the community colleges closed…

FYI non documented people do pay taxes. go ask h&r block or something they’ll tell how they do it. if anything they’re the ones that do not receive the funds that they help generate.
before you make a comment like that please do some research and inform yourself.
thank you!
