"Some college administrators seem so distracted with fund raising, academic infighting, and community initiatives that they set up their emergency communications departments very poorly. Training is poor to nonexistent, secretaries are pressed into service with tremendous responsibilities for running 'notification systems' 24/7 and on weekends because no one else knows how to do it and the administration won’t pay for additional staff. Procedures are seat-of-the-pants and dependent on HIPPO (highest paid person’s opinion), except when something like Virginia Tech happens and there is some sort of scramble to do something different." --Donna

Women's Basketball Coach Hits the $1-Million Mark

Pat Summitt, the legendary women’s basketball coach at the University of Tennessee, has become the first female college coach to break the $1-million salary barrier, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel

Ms. Summitt, who has won 913 games, the most of any Division I coach, will make $1.125-million for the 2006-7 season and an average of $1.3-million for the remaining five years of her contract.

Bruce Pearl, Tennessee’s men’s basketball coach, will make $1.1-million next season and $1.3-million a year for the following five years.

Ms. Summitt earned about $20,000 a year when she started coaching at Tennessee, in the 1970s, and as recently as 1997, she took home only $390,000, at the time a record for women in college sports (The Chronicle, August 8, 1997, and May 1, 1998).

  1. You go Pat!!! It is about time that you got paid what the going rate is for even the mid-rate male coaches. Thank you for your continuing dedication to women’s basketball!
