"Some college administrators seem so distracted with fund raising, academic infighting, and community initiatives that they set up their emergency communications departments very poorly. Training is poor to nonexistent, secretaries are pressed into service with tremendous responsibilities for running 'notification systems' 24/7 and on weekends because no one else knows how to do it and the administration won’t pay for additional staff. Procedures are seat-of-the-pants and dependent on HIPPO (highest paid person’s opinion), except when something like Virginia Tech happens and there is some sort of scramble to do something different." --Donna

Wesleyan U. Wonders if Senator Kennedy Will Speak at Commencement

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy is scheduled to deliver the commencement address at Wesleyan University, in Connecticut, this weekend, but it’s not clear if the Democratic lawmaker from Massachusetts, who received a diagnosis of brain cancer on Tuesday, still plans to speak.

“I’ve had no word yet from the senator’s office,” said David Pesci, director of media relations at Wesleyan. Mr. Pesci said college officials had discussed unspecified backup plans. “We’re still hopeful that the senator will be here,” he said. “I don’t know how any of us would react to this kind of news.”

Mr. Kennedy was released from a Boston hospital today. His wife, Vicki Kennedy, told friends that he wanted to compete in an annual sailing race, from Cape Cod to Nantucket, this weekend, the Associated Press reported.

Update (5/22): Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential candidate, will replace Sen. Edward M. Kennedy as commencement speaker.

  1. The faculty of Wesleyan University was informed yesterday that our President, Michael Roth, had spoken to a member of the Kennedy family. We have been assured that “the Kennedy family will not let Wesleyan down”. Perhaps the Senator will speak on Sunday, perhaps some other member of the family will speak in his stead. It is amazingly gracious of the Kennedy family to think of us at a time like this.
