Chronicle Reporter Honored for Coverage of Minority Issues

Peter Schmidt, a senior writer at The Chronicle, has received a national award for his coverage of minority issues. Lincoln University, a historically black college in Missouri, confers the Unity Awards in Media annually for coverage of issues affecting members of minority groups and people with disabilities. Mr. Schmidt won the Unity Award for education reporting for a series of articles on affirmative action in higher education in 2006:

  1. What about all of the firings of African American administrators in the University of Wisconsin System: Barrows, Jones, Ross, and black woman at Green Bay. Did not see a story of these firings, and three of them filed discrimination suits.

  2. Congratulations to Peter Schmidt. I have followed many of his articles and noted the quality of his work. This is richly deserved.

  3. I have read Peter’s stories and wondered where was the quality. He writes safe articles, covering the subject only lightly and steering well away from controversy.

  4. The Chronicle has covered stories on the African American women who were fired. But then it seems like you # 4l would rather have him write stories that reinforce stereotypical largely negative views of African American educators and administrators. To the one who signs “itself” (for you obviously cannot be an educated human making those types of ignorant racists remarks) “unreal marci,“you are a REAL IDIOTIC BIGOT” the typical cowardly type that thrives in the safe anonymity of blogs like this. Do us a favor. Renew your membership to a KKK blog (if any of them can read or write that is) and leave the Chronicle blogs to thinking, edcuated people. Finally here is another charade: White males make the best academic administrators, school presidents etc…
Time to turn in your white sheets Marci.

  5. Wow Liz C., I am a ‘thinking, educated’ person and I frankly don’t get what your over all point is relative to the comments you mention. Congrats to Mr. Schmidt. There certainly could be more ‘hard hitting’ converage on the issues but that might better be left to other pubs.

  6. I was too quick with my comment, not having read all his stories. On balance, Peter’s work is on point and provocative. Keep plugging, Mr. Schmidt, and congratulations.
