"Some college administrators seem so distracted with fund raising, academic infighting, and community initiatives that they set up their emergency communications departments very poorly. Training is poor to nonexistent, secretaries are pressed into service with tremendous responsibilities for running 'notification systems' 24/7 and on weekends because no one else knows how to do it and the administration won’t pay for additional staff. Procedures are seat-of-the-pants and dependent on HIPPO (highest paid person’s opinion), except when something like Virginia Tech happens and there is some sort of scramble to do something different." --Donna

Coach's Whistle-Blower Lawsuit Against U. of Nevada at Reno Is Dismissed

A state hearing officer has dismissed a lawsuit filed by a former women’s soccer coach at the University of Nevada at Reno who said the institution had fired her in retaliation for her allegations that it mistreated her players.

The former coach, Terri Patraw, sued the university in November, alleging that its officials had violated National Collegiate Athletic Association regulations and Title IX requirements, and had discriminated against members of the women’s soccer team. After complaining of the alleged mistreatment, Ms. Patraw, who had been with the university since early 2004, said she was fired in late August without a reason.

Last Thursday a hearing officer of the Nevada State Personnel Commission issued a 57-page decision dismissing the case. Ms. Patraw, the opinion states, “failed to show by substantial, reliable, and probative evidence” that she had been fired because she disclosed improper actions by the university. —Libby Sander

  2. Analyzed and stated like a true militant feminist. Damn the facts, the woman is always the one wronged.

  3. Ah. Making assumptions. Read the findings. Ms. Patraw set herself up and then regretted it. Easier to blame her employer than to take responsibility for her own actions. BTW, I’m neither white nor straight.

  5. The decision is littered with errors by the hearing officer. Patraw has grounds for negligence against him. He applied the wrong testimony to individuals in the write-up.

  6. Forgot to mention that the hearing officer admitted he was a men’s basketball fan in the middle of the hearing. He stated his bias and ignored the facts in the documents.

  7. The hearing officer misapplied the burden of proof. This will be an easy appeal.
