"Some college administrators seem so distracted with fund raising, academic infighting, and community initiatives that they set up their emergency communications departments very poorly. Training is poor to nonexistent, secretaries are pressed into service with tremendous responsibilities for running 'notification systems' 24/7 and on weekends because no one else knows how to do it and the administration won’t pay for additional staff. Procedures are seat-of-the-pants and dependent on HIPPO (highest paid person’s opinion), except when something like Virginia Tech happens and there is some sort of scramble to do something different." --Donna Most Colleges Avoid Risk Management, Report Says

Colleges now have 60 days to inventory the chemicals in their laboratories and submit the results to an online federal database called Top Screen. The department made the list public more than two weeks ago, but today’s notice starts the countdown. Laboratories that do not comply with the deadline could face fines or closure. The rules allow facilities to request 60-day extensions. —JJ Hermes Posted on Tuesday November 20, 2007 | Permalink |Comments

I think it’s ludicrous that a person cannot carry a full tube of toothpaste on an airplane while the colleges and universities of this nation can store and use thousands of pounds of hazmats with no accountability – how do YOU spell corruption?

How about because a college is not an airplane for starters?

Anyone who has taken organic chemistry knows that you can make any substance you want. These ready-made chemicals will only get used by amateurs.
