House Republicans to Present Bill to Renew the Higher Education Act
Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives plan to offer proposals today for reauthorizing, or renewing, the Higher Education Act.
In many respects, the Republican bill mirrors legislation that the House passed in 2006, when the chamber was under Republican control. But it contains some changes in that bill’s provisions on college costs and loan transparency, and it would repeal a provision of the budget-reconciliation law that would test the concept of using an auction to set rates on student-loan subsidies. President Bush signed the reconciliation measure into law last week.
House Democrats have yet to introduce their reauthorization bill, but are expected to do so in the next few weeks. The Senate passed its version of the reauthorizing legislation this past summer. —Kelly Field
