Merger Talks Resume Between NYU and Polytechnic U.
Three years after merger talks failed between New York University and Polytechnic University, the two crosstown neighbors are back at the negotiating table. This time, a deal looks likely, according to officials at both NYU, in Manhattan, and Polytechnic, in Brooklyn. Polytechnic, an engineering institution with 3,000 students, has long struggled with operating deficits and weak bond ratings, but its officials say they are confident that the bad days are behind them. For NYU, the merger would mean new engineering offerings and faculty collaboration. It would also give NYU a foothold, and a place to expand, in an increasingly primo New York City borough. —Paul Fain

NYU keeps pushing the envelope of innovative academic programming and this alumnus is more proud to be one with each passing year. The violet entrepreneurial spirit is worthy of its home in NYC and characteristic of a mere handful of the top large research universities. Kudos to alma mater!

Deep in a financial criisis, in 1972, an emergency task force of deans, of which I was a member, recommended the sale of NYU’s University Heights campus in the Bronx, One result was the merger of NYU’s fine School of Engineering into then Brooklyn Polytech. It is wonderful to have lived to see the reuniting of NYU and Engineering, through the merger with Polytechnic University. Kudos to Presidents Sexton and Hultin, and their resspective boards.

I earned both my Masters and Ph.D. from “Brooklyn Poly”, but NYU was my first choice for grad school. Many university people are not aware of Poly’s reputation at MIT—where I am now. I’d say this is great news!

Ray, I am very pro merger. However after speaking with poly alumni relations, that as a poly alumni we won’t be able to list “NYU” on our resumes and so we will have to deal with the fact that we studied at at a university that no longer technically exists.
— Hillel Horovitz Aug 14, 02:36 PM #
I disagree. Polytechnic will technically still exist. The new name, The Polytechnic Institute of NYU replaces the school’s name given to it in 1973 before it was changed to Poly U. It was named Polytechnic Institute of of NY. My Masters actually says that. I just have to add U.

Right, however will we be able to list The Polytechnic Institute of NYU or Poly U? My degree says Poly U. And when a company does a background check they will refer to NYU, not Poly since it will be a part of NYU and NYU will say we never existed in their system. It doesn’t look good for the alumnus. Poly needs to ensure that the alumnus are integrated into the new system.

My other degree says Polytechnic U also. All you have to do is to write Poly U and then in parenthesis put (now Polytechnic Institute of NYU). It depends on perspective. Remember that NYU is a part of poly because of the 1973 merger of the NYU eng school. Poly is a great school and will continue to be a great school thanks to NYU. Any employee who can’t understand change and merger is too dumb to hire you anyway.

Hillel: Just for the record I can spell Parentheses and I meant “employer” , not “employee” in my last reply. But then again I am not looking for a job! Best wishes fellow alum.

I am an employee and alumnus of polytechnic U. I am so exited about this merger. Most the staff that are opposing this great position that both Universities have now are pasically unqualified to work in either school and it’s about time that they come out from the shadow and face reality. This is great thing for the students. I command President Sexton and Our President Hulton he is a real leader with wonderful vision and mission.
Good luck
