"Some college administrators seem so distracted with fund raising, academic infighting, and community initiatives that they set up their emergency communications departments very poorly. Training is poor to nonexistent, secretaries are pressed into service with tremendous responsibilities for running 'notification systems' 24/7 and on weekends because no one else knows how to do it and the administration won’t pay for additional staff. Procedures are seat-of-the-pants and dependent on HIPPO (highest paid person’s opinion), except when something like Virginia Tech happens and there is some sort of scramble to do something different." --Donna

2 Associations Plan New Journal on Diversity in Higher Education

The American Psychological Association and the new National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education have announced plans to jointly publish a new quarterly journal to guide colleges’ efforts related to diversity and inclusiveness. The groups say the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, to be started next year, will feature research findings, descriptions of promising practices, commentaries, and book reviews. Its editorial board includes the chancellor of the University System of Maryland, William E. Kirwan, as well as the diversity officers of several public and private colleges. Its editor is Michael R. Stevenson, associate provost and professor of psychology at Miami University, in Ohio. —Peter Schmidt

  1. I support the efforts to start a new journal. The joint effort is to be applauded. The American Psychological Association and the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education can provide a useful outlet for the expression of creative, innovative, and practical ideas to help solve many challenging, lingering, and futuristic problems.
