GAO Report Summarizes Ways to Make U.S. More Welcoming to Foreign Students

The Government Accountability Office released a report today that summarizes a forum the federal agency held last September with academic, business, and government leaders to discuss international-student enrollments at American universities. Participants said that, among other things, the United States should develop a national strategic plan for recruitment, change the immigration system to make it easier for students to secure and renew visas, and look to developing countries and other nontraditional sources for international students. Recommendations in the report, “Global Competitiveness: Implications for the Nation’s Higher Education System,” echo those of other recent studies, including a report last June by Nafsa: Association of International Educators and the annual “Open Doors” report last November by the Institute of International Education.
