Math Problem at a Chicago College Leads to Stabbing

A GED student in a class at Malcolm X College, part of the City Colleges of Chicago, grew so frustrated at not understanding a mathematics concept on Tuesday that she stabbed her instructor with a steak knife, according to a police report cited by the Chicago Sun-Times. The instructor received only a minor injury, and was treated and released from a local hospital. The student repeatedly said, “I don’t understand. ... Explain to me” before she assaulted the teacher, the police said. The student, who has a record that features 27 misdemeanors, now faces new charges.

  1. This is yet another sad reminder that we live in a society where so many thoughtless people only know how to respond to life’s frustrations with violence. A major part of education in the twenty-first century needs to be lessons in civility.

  2. It is not thoughtlessness that causes children to ‘act out’ and adults to take out their frustrations with violence, but an inability to express themselves verbally. What is needed is not censure but better basic education.

  3. Basic education starts at home. If it doesn’t all is usually lost (I bet you have three exceptions) unfortunately there are millions that prove the rule. I used to think my mother was very intolerant. She did not tolerate; “I cant”, “It’s not my fault”, “My teach can’t teach”, “I have so much home work”. I could go on and on. But all nine of use learned to read and write. We all graduated from high school. Most went to college. Four have a Masters or higher. Not bad for the little Mexican girl who walked in to the U.S. picking cotton with a fourth grade education. Poverty and ignorance ends when one parent chooses to end it.
