Brigham Young Officials Used Their Posts to Round Up Support for Gov. Romney
Brigham Young University may have violated a law prohibiting political endorsements by tax-exempt organizations when two professors used their official posts and e-mail accounts to round up alumni supporters of Gov. Mitt Romney’s expected run for president in 2008, according to an article in The Salt Lake Tribune. A message in support of Governor Romney, a Massachusetts Republican, was sent by the university business school’s dean and associate dean to the school’s alumni. A Brigham Young spokeswoman said that the university was unaware of the message until an alumnus brought it up, but that the university had put a stop to further messages.
