"Some college administrators seem so distracted with fund raising, academic infighting, and community initiatives that they set up their emergency communications departments very poorly. Training is poor to nonexistent, secretaries are pressed into service with tremendous responsibilities for running 'notification systems' 24/7 and on weekends because no one else knows how to do it and the administration won’t pay for additional staff. Procedures are seat-of-the-pants and dependent on HIPPO (highest paid person’s opinion), except when something like Virginia Tech happens and there is some sort of scramble to do something different." --Donna

Yale Seeks $3-Billion in New Campaign

Fund-raising fever spread over the weekend as Yale University officially kicked off a $3-billion campaign, scheduled to conclude in 2011.

Richard C. Levin, Yale’s president, said that the campaign would help transform the university “from a local to a regional to a national to an international university,” according a news release.

Yale officials began the quiet phase of the campaign two years ago and have raised about 43 percent of the total, according to the Yale Daily News.

Columbia University announced a new campaign last Friday, with a goal of raising $4-billion (The Chronicle, September 29). It would be the largest ever in higher education. The University of Virginia kicked off a $3-billion drive over the weekend as well.
