Big Dreams. Bold Future. The story of the University of South Florida is one that began as a vision to create the state's first public university that would specifically address the needs of Florida's rapidly emerging urban regions. In just a little more than 50 years, USF has progressed from 2,000 students and five buildings located on a sandy, abandoned airfield to become a university with global reach and impact — one of the top universities in the country in research and community engagement. Serving more than 45,000 students, USF is one Florida's three, leading research universities and the nation's ninth largest public university. It's an exciting story that has been shaped by distinguished faculty and dedicated staff. And it's a story with an equally exciting future as faculty and staff, under the leadership of President Judy Genshaft, continue to refine USF's role as a major metropolitan research university committed to making a difference in the lives of students and in the community, state, nation and world. We welcome your interest in becoming part of our story of success and our community of scholars. About USF
Top for Research and InnovationUSF is one of only 63 public research universities in the country named by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to its highest tier of research productivity and the only Florida university designated by the Carnegie Foundation as "most engaged." With a strong focus in medical treatment and research, bioengineering, life sciences and the arts, USF received more than $300 million in research contracts and grants last year. Research that drives and supports technological and economic development has earned USF a leadership role in microelectronics, information technology, applied physics, biophysics and urban transportation. Revenue generated from licenses of faculty intellectual property to private businesses has exceeded $2 million — a milestone that places USF second in technology commercialization in the state university system.
