Welcome to The University of Texas at Austin. The innovation, creativity and quality of teaching, scholarship, research and public service under way at the university touches the lives of people across the state, the nation and the world.
We do this by pioneering technological advances that contribute directly to the state's growth, connecting Austin to history and culture through world-class museums and outstanding libraries, addressing societal challenges and hosting a wide variety of special events and athletic competitions.
The campus is home to outstanding faculty, staff and the largest student body in the United States.
The faculty includes scholars who have won the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, MacArthur Fellowships and many other honors. Our student body is second only to Harvard University in the number of National Merit Scholars.
Our core purpose is to transform lives for the benefit of society through learning, discovery, freedom, leadership, individual opportunity and responsibility. These basic human values are reflected in the six strategic themes President Larry R. Faulkner has made the focus of his administration:
As the largest component of The University of Texas System, the university is a major research institution that is home to about 50,000 students, 2,500 faculty and 11,000 staff members. We are one of Austin's largest employers.
The university was founded in 1883 on 40 acres near the state capitol. A gateway to the charming Texas "Hill Country," the university's reach extends well beyond its 357-acre main campus.
About 25 percent of our students are enrolled in graduate and professional programs, giving The University of Texas at Austin the distinction of awarding the greatest number of doctor's degrees of any university in the nation. We attract the best and brightest by offering one of the widest selections of study areas among major universities in the United States.
While we are a large university, we comprise many smaller learning communities centered on the common goal of expanding knowledge and human understanding. We invite you to share in the resources of our world-class academic community through a virtual tour of the campus at:
