Temple University

Temple University is one of Pennsylvania's three public research universities. With an enrollment of some 33,000 students, Temple has a distinguished, 119-year-old mission of providing high-quality education at an affordable cost.

Temple is also an international university, and it has been said that "the sun never sets on Temple University." There are successful, long-established campuses in Tokyo, Japan, and Rome, Italy, and Temple offers educational programs throughout the world, including London, Athens, Tel Aviv, Paris, Ghana, Beijing, and Seoul. The School of Law, for example, has Study Abroad opportunities in Rome, Athens, Tel Aviv, and Tokyo. Its Japan program is the only law semester in Asia accredited by the American Bar Association. The Law School will also launch the first American law education program in China.

The University has seven campuses in southeastern Pennsylvania--Main, Health Sciences, Podiatric Medicine, Temple University Center City, Temple University Ambler, Tyler School of Art, and Temple University Fort Washington--as well as Temple University Harrisburg.

Temple offers 119 bachelor's degreees and nearly 190 graduate degress. The University is the 36th largest university in the United States, and it is the thrid largest provider of professional education (law, dentistry, medicine, pharmacy and podiatric medicine) in the country.

There are 2,600 full-time and part-time faculty in 17 schools and colleges of the University: the colleges of Science and Technology, including the College of Engineering; Liberal Arts; Education; Esther Boyer College of Music; and Allied Health Professions; and the schools of Business and Management; Tourism and Hospitality Management; Communications and Theater; Social Administration; Pharmacy; and Tyler School of Art; and four outstanding professional schools of Law, Dentistry, Medicine, and Podiatric Medicine.

Temple is a Carnegie Research I institution, and more than 2% of basic research funding is turned into licenses and product development--one of the highest percentages in academia. Temple's Philadelphia base--hub of the pharmaceutical, medical, and computer industries--positions the University for corporate partnerships. Its interdisciplinary research draws on faculty expertise from neurosciences, environmental and materials sciences, medicine, basic sciences, and other fields.

The University is recognized internationally for its research institutes, including the Thrombosis Center and Fels Institute for Cancer Research and Molecular Biology. The Heart Transplantation Center is one of the busiest adult heart transplant programs in America. Pediatric facilities are the Temple University Children's Medical Center and the affiliated Shriners Hospital for Children.

Temple University Hospital--the anchor of the Temple University Health System--has earned an international reputation for medical research, tertiary health care, and for providing outstanding care to all members of the community, regardless of ability to pay.

Temple is governed by a 36-member Board of Trustees, one third of whom are appointed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Its eighth President is David Adamany.
