Youngstown State University is committed to the highest quality standards in teaching, research, and public service. In fact, first-year students at Youngstown State University are more likely to be taught by senior faculty than students at any other public university in Ohio. A commitment to involving faculty in the scholarship of teaching and learning has earned YSU national recognition as a leader in student-centered higher education.
The Youngstown State University campus, located on a hill overlooking downtown Youngstown, is graced with tall trees, winding walkways, and colorful gardens that offer a comfortable, attractive place to pursue one's academic goals. The University's ties to the surrounding community are an integral part of its mission and involve faculty, staff, and students in a wide variety of research, educational, and business partnerships.
Youngstown State University offers over 100 undergraduate majors at the associate and baccalaureate levels, as well as 30 master's degrees and a doctorate in educational leadership. The university is also a consortium member of the Northeast Ohio Universities College of Medicine, which offers the six-year B.S./M.D. program. Youngstown State University offers an honors degree program, as well as the option of individualized curriculum programs that enable students to develop their own majors in consultation with faculty. Co-operative education is stressed as part of a student's total academic experience, and co-ops and internships are readily available in area businesses, industries, schools, agencies, and medical facilities in a number of degree programs.
When it comes to costs, the University has worked to keep tuition affordable, even as state subsidy has declined. Relatively low tuition, coupled with a strong financial aid program, keeps YSU accessible to students from a wide range of economic circumstances, a traditional and continuing part of our mission.
For a growing number of on-campus residents, as well as those students who commute, the University provides a wealth of activities and resources designed to enhance the college experience. Student organizations and publications, recreation programs, nationally ranked athletic teams, theater productions, and concerts involve students at all levels, building creativity, leadership skills, and social connections that last a lifetime. A network of student services, including career search, tutoring, counseling, first-year student services, international student services, and special assistance in writing, math, and study skills assures that students have the help they need to achieve their goals.
