Established in 1804, Ohio University is the oldest public institution of higher learning in the state of Ohio and the first in the Northwest Territory. A comprehensive, national university, Ohio University offers both distinctive, high quality undergraduate education and excellent, focused graduate education. The University's educational enterprise is strengthened by superiority in research and creative activity and a fundamental service commitment to its region. The educational mission is realized in a unique residential setting on the main campus in Athens and through outreach and access efforts on five regional campuses.

The mission of Ohio University is articulated through three major goals:

  1. Maximize the learning opportunities provided by a unique residential community.
  2. Foster active learning and student engagement through creative approaches to education.
  3. Emphasize diversity and character though a commitment to a just and diverse community.

Commitment to a Just and Diverse Community

A just and diverse community acknowledges the uniqueness of the individual and her/his socio-cultural context, and provides systems and structures to support and promote the full, fair, and respected participation of all members. It holds as paramount the dignity of all people. It strives for acceptance, participation, and interdependence.

The commitment to a just and diverse community is rooted in the recognition that Ohio University comprises individuals with varied social and cultural backgrounds and experiences. Because discrimination, prejudice, and unequal opportunity negatively impact the personal, intellectual, and social development of all individuals, the University must work to eliminate these oppressive behaviors and provide opportunities so that individuals can develop to their fullest potential.
