UNC Charlotte is the fourth largest of the 17 institutions within the University of North Carolina system. It serves the people of North Carolina, with special emphasis on Charlotte, the nation's 21st largest city, and the surrounding 13-county metropolitan region, which includes 1.8 million people. www.uncc.edu With enrollment over 22,000 students (45 percent men, 55 percent women), including 4,500 graduate students, UNC Charlotte is the largest institution, and the only doctoral granting research institution, in the Charlotte region. Enrollment is projected to increase through the year 2015 to more than 28,000. UNC Charlotte is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and responsive public service. Extramural research funding amounts to more than $33 million a year. The Office of Technology Transfer supports the commercialization of university-developed intellectual property for the economic benefit of the region. The University's outreach programs extend into each of the 13 counties in the surrounding metropolitan region. UNC Charlotte is a leader in the preparation of science and mathematics teachers for North Carolina’s K-12 classrooms Interdisciplinary research programs are organized in centers and institutes such as the Charlotte Research Institute, UNC Charlotte Urban Institute, Institute for Social Capital, Bioinformatics Research Center, Global Institute for Energy and Environmental Systems, Charlotte Visualization Center, Charlotte Community Design Studio, NC Motorsports and Automotive Research Center, and Centers for Applied and Professional Ethics, Applied Geographic Information Science, Biomedical Engineering Systems, Optoelectronics and Optical Communications, Precision Metrology, Real Estate, Transportation Policy Studies. UNC Charlotte also serves the region through the Ben Craig Center (a small business incubator), the University Research Park, and the Office of Continuing Education. UNC Charlotte confers over 4,000 degrees a year and has more than 78,000 living alumni. The University's 1,000-acre campus contains over 100 buildings including seven new academic buildings completed within the last few years, and construction started on a new Student Union, scheduled to be open Fall 2009, and a new Center City building in the heart of Charlotte. The J. Murrey Atkins Library is a state-of-the-art facility that houses a collection that includes over one million bound volumes and extensive education, audiovisual, document and microform collections.
