North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is a university on the move. As a land-grant historically black university, with Carnegie classification as high research activity and a 118-year history, the faculty, staff, and students have set the standard high for innovation, uncompromising excellence, and forward-looking endeavors. We have a growing student population over 10,000 and together with five other colleges and universities, we are located in the beautiful Piedmont Triad community of Greensboro, North Carolina.
A&T is home to learner-centered programs and foremost research initiatives with sponsored research totaling $48.5 million in the past year. A&T is noted as the nation's top producer of African American engineers and technologists. The School of Business and Economics is fully accredited in all undergraduate accounting and business programs by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International. In addition to its 117 undergraduate degree programs offered in agriculture, arts and sciences, business, education, engineering, nursing, and technology are 58 master's and five doctoral programs. Our graduates have explored space and run for president.
North Carolina A&T State University has been awarded a grant for an Engineering Research Center (ERC) from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Engineering Research Center grants are among the most prestigious NSF awards, and they represent major investments by NSF in partnership with industry to transform engineering research and education. The Center aims to produce innovative technologies and engineering graduates to significantly enhance the competitiveness of the U.S. economy. The ERC program has made 49 awards since its initiation in 1985 and made five new awards in 2008. The award to A&T marks the first time that an HBCU has been the lead institution of an ERC. The award funding has been approved at $18 million for the initial five years, with a potential duration of 10 years. The NSF ERC for Revolutionizing Metallic Biomaterials at A&T will conduct research in the areas of biomedical engineering and nano-bio applications and is in partnership with the Universities of Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. It also has a global technical partner in Germany's Hannover School of Medicine and a global cultural and outreach partner in the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in India.
The Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (JSNN) was created by A&T and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with the support of the North Carolina General Assembly and the Piedmont Triad community. Its goals include becoming a world leader in nano-related research, education and outreach with a particular focus on nanobio-related areas. The fields of nanoscience and nanoengineering are devoted to the investigation and fabrication of structures below 100 nanometers in size to build systems with unique properties. Nanotechnology is currently used in many fields such as electronics, communications, medical and pharmaceutical applications, sporting goods, defense, textiles, automobiles, and cosmetics.
Thanks to a $160 million bond program approved by the citizens of North Carolina in 2000, the landscape of our campus is ever-changing. The construction under this bond program extends into 2009. The vista of our campus now includes new homes for the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business and Economics, new residence halls for our students, renovated space for University Galleries, Memorial Student Union, a new Science Building, new Fitness and Wellness Center, new School of Education and multiple renovations to existing facilities. Projects under construction or in design include renovations to the Department of Biology and College of Engineering. The design for the new Academic Classroom building has been completed and construction is expected to start in late May 2009.
The University and the North Carolina A&T University Foundation entered into ground-breaking partnership that allowed us to advance the construction of much needed residences for our students and a tennis complex. Additional private giving resulted in our construction of a new eight-lane Olympic-quality track and field facility and wellness center in Aggie Stadium.
If you are looking for a career and not a job, North Carolina A&T is the university for you. We are a community of talented scholars, researchers, and staff who are experienced and dedicated. The University is an exciting place to be where engagement with colleagues, community and the world is valued and nurtured.
A few highlights of our benefits include tuition waivers for our employees to attend class at North Carolina A&T or any of the other sixteen UNC schools. We offer educational leave and community service opportunities in addition to the usual benefit packages of health and leave benefits.
Our vision as a learner-centered community that develops and preserves intellectual capital through interdisciplinary learning, discovery, engagement, and operational excellence is built upon solid foundations of disciplines within each college and school. We want the best people doing their best work in the best place—North Carolina A&T.
