SUNY Potsdam is one of the 64 units of the State University of New York and one of 13 Arts and Sciences Colleges. Its origin was the St. Lawrence Academy, founded in 1816 by early settlers of the region. It continued as Potsdam Normal School in 1867, as Potsdam State Teachers College in 1942, and became part of the largest university system in the United States, the State University of New York, in 1948. Long recognized as one of the top regional institutions in the northern United States, as cited by U.S. News & World Report, SUNY Potsdam preserves a tradition of excellence in the liberal arts, music and teacher education. The college fosters a student-centered environment through efforts in program development that encourage faculty/student research and innovative pedagogy.
Located along the Raquette River in the St. Lawrence Valley, both SUNY Potsdam and the Village of Potsdam are safe, welcoming environments. The Village of Potsdam features a charming downtown listed on the National Historic Register. There are three higher education institutions within a 10-mile radius, offering a culturally active college town. For those ready to venture into the region, northern New York - or what we fondly call the North Country - is home to some of the beautiful flora and fauna in North America. Whether you're hiking in the expansive forest preserves, canoeing along one of St. Lawrence County's many rivers and lakes or exploring the Thousand Islands, you'll enjoy the clean, fresh air and all that nature has to offer.
The sprawling Adirondack Park is just 15 minutes away and offers visitors 46 high peaks and spectacular fall foliage. Within the Adirondacks, you'll find the scenic Olympic Village of Lake Placid. Site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, the 2000 Winter Goodwill Games and ESPN's Great Outdoor Games, Lake Placid boasts great downhill skiing, bobsledding, mountain biking, snowshoeing and golf, along with a wealth of shopping venues and cultural events.
Potsdam is ideally situated near Canada, as well. Ottawa, Canada's national capital, is just 90 minutes away and features the country's Parliament, the National Art Gallery, historic English-style architecture, and annual Winterlude Festival, ice skating on the Rideau Canal and an annual Tulip Festival. Montreal, a modern city in Quebec with old-world flair, is also just over 90 minutes away and offers museums, shopping, concerts and a variety of nightclubs and cafes.
The 240 acre campus has more than 35 buildings. With a total workforce of over 980 employees, the college is one of the top 10 employers in St. Lawrence County. There are currently 300 faculty teaching over 4300 students. We offer Bachelor's and Master's degree. The college has three schools, The Crane School of Music training future teachers, music business leaders and professional performers; The School of Education and Professional Studies offering programs in Teacher Preparation, Community Health, Wilderness Education and; and the School of Arts and Sciences offering a strong liberal arts education combined with career preparation opportunities.
