Rensselaer, why not change the world?

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, founded in 1824, is the nation’s oldest technological university. The university offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in engineering, the sciences, information technology, architecture, management, and the humanities and social sciences. Institute programs serve undergraduates, graduate students, and working professionals around the world. Rensselaer faculty are known for pre-eminence in research conducted in a wide range of fields, with particular emphasis in biotechnology, nanotechnology, information technology, and the media arts and technology. The Institute is well known for its success in the transfer of technology from the laboratory to the marketplace so that new discoveries and inventions benefit human life, protect the environment, and strengthen economic development.

Since the 1999 inauguration of its president, Shirley Ann Jackson, Ph.D., Rensselaer has undergone a revitalization effort that has touched all aspects of its university community. Her vision - to fortify campus resources, degree programs, and research capabilities - now is being realized.

Rensselaer is making investments in its faculty, programs, and facilities to strengthen its standing as a top-tier technological research university with global reach and global impact.

World-Class Faculty -- Rensselaer’s more than 450 faculty members are a collaborative community working in an atmosphere of increasing interdisciplinarity. They welcome that and are committed to going even further - from "low walls" between disciplines to "no walls" - believing that those intersections foster some of the most vital research today. Rensselaer’s faculty includes National Science Foundation Faculty (NSF) Early Career Development Award winners, members of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering, and other eminent professionals.

"Constellation" Recruitment -- Constellations are multidisciplinary teams of senior faculty, junior faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates. The constellation faculty members comprise three or more outstanding stars in a particular research field. Rensselaer’s research constellations build upon existing core strengths in microelectronics and microsystems, advanced materials, nanotechnology, and advanced scientific computation, modeling, and simulation.

State-of-the-Art Facilities - New facilities and renovations are springing up everywhere at Rensselaer. From its 218,000-square-foot Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies to its 220,000-square-foot Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center now under construction, the university is making investments to broaden students' resources. Across campus, laboratories are being updated with the latest equipment to provide students and faculty with ideal research settings. In addition, Rensselaer is home to world-renowned integrated electronics, polymer synthesis, automated technology, and lighting research centers, as well as a pioneering small business incubator center and technology park, which foster entrepreneurial activities arising from Rensselaer's graduate research programs.

Unique and Emerging Programs - Rensselaer's five schools - Architecture, Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, Management and Technology, and Science - come together seamlessly to create a fully interdisciplinary learning environment. A number of programs have received honors from the National Science Foundation and the Department of Education, and Rensselaer is also one of only six NSF nanoscience centers in the country.

Rensselaer has a 265-acre main campus in Troy, N.Y., a 14-acre campus in Hartford, Conn., and regional education centers in Groton, Conn., and Malta, N.Y. The Institute operates the 1,250-acre Rensselaer Technology Park in Troy, N.Y. Rensselaer is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
