More than 70 percent of classes have fewer than 30 students. The campus is committed to providing distance education and flexible scheduling, including a new state-assisted summer semester. First-rate programs, unique opportunities CSUS boasts some of the California's most innovative programs, including the state's first public university master's degree in software engineering, the state's only doctorate in public history and the state's largest cooperative education program. Government internship opportunities through the Capital Fellows Program and Sacramento Semester provide unparalleled access to the largest state government in the country. The criminal justice division is the largest in the West. And each year nearly 700 first-time teachers earn credentials through the University's teacher education program, one of the largest in the state. Getting bigger, getting better
The University's seven colleges -- Arts and Letters, Business Administration, Engineering and Computer Science, Education, Health and Human Services, Natural Science and Mathematics, and Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies -- offer more than 60 undergraduate and 40 graduate degrees, including one joint doctorate. A wealth of resources CSUS is part of the California State University system, one of the largest public higher education systems in the world. The University's total budget is more than $300 million annually, with about $160 million from the state's general fund. Research grants to students and faculty nearly quadrupled in the last decade to about $35 million in 1999-2000 with contributed resources approaching $10 million. The University's 1 million-volume library provides access to thousands of maps and slides and millions of microforms and non-print media. More than 4,000 magazines, technical and scholarly journals are available with thousands more offered electronically. It also provides a variety of full-text databases that are searchable over the Internet. All-star students, top-notch faculty The University's multicultural student body encompasses both traditional and non-traditional students. First-year students come from the top third of their high school classes, 65 percent had a high school grade point average of 3.0 or higher and 25 percent had a high school GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Teaching has remained the faculty's top priority since the University's founding more than 50 years ago. The University offers substantial opportunities for student-faculty interaction in a technology-enhanced learning environment. More than 95 percent of the full-time faculty hold a doctorate or other terminal degree. Capital University, Capital Community Situated in a culturally diverse, metropolitan area of nearly 2 million people, California State University, Sacramento offers ample opportunities for outreach, research, culture and recreation. Partnerships between the University, and government, non-profit groups and businesses contribute to the social, economic, cultural and educational climate of the region and of the state. The University's location in California's capital city offers many opportunities to conduct research with agencies of the largest state government in the country. In addition, the region's technology sector continues to expand, driven by high-tech heavyweights like Intel and Hewlett-Packard. In fact, H-P hires more college graduates from CSUS than from any other university in the nation.
Sacramento is one of very few affordable big cities in the Golden State, offering the benefits of an urban California lifestyle -- art galleries, museums, theater, great restaurants and shopping, and professional sports teams. The Capital Region offers miles of bike trails, numerous golf courses, and dozens of choices in water recreation, with nearby camping, hiking and skiing. The San Francisco Bay Area, Lake Tahoe and Napa Valley are short drives away. Professional sports teams that call Sacramento home include the NBA Kings, the WNBA Monarchs and AAA baseball River Cats. The University's Hornet Stadium will once again be the site of the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in 2004. And the CSUS Aquatic Center at Lake Natoma is the rowing venue in the Bay Area bid for the 2012 Olympic Games.
The city hosts the country's oldest traditional jazz festival, the Sacamento Jazz Jubilee. It also boasts the State Railroad Museum, the Golden State Museum and the historic charm of Old Sacramento.
