What is Cornell?Cornell "is truly a special place, with distinctive traditions and historic roots, a vigorous and productive record of current accomplishment and commitment, and a future that should be very bright. All who live, work and study there are fortunate indeed." --Accreditation Report of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools "Today, Cornell is recognized as one of the handful of truly superb, comprehensive research universities in the world. All of us are here because we want to be part of an institution that extends the frontiers of human knowledge and that prepares students to contribute to the betterment of our world. With faculty, students, graduates, and staff who provide global leadership in every domain of our society, Cornell University is a distinguished private university with a broad public mission." --President Jeffrey S. Lehman '77
In 1865, Ezra Cornell founded his university as "an institution where any person can find instruction in any study." Nonsectarian and coeducational, Cornell University was considered so unusual for its time that many educators assumed it would fail to attract a student body. Yet from its beginning, Cornell has attracted both male and female students, and people from many races and nations. It had one of the first women's residence halls in the Northeast, was one of the first to admit students of color, and in 1906 was the founding institution for Alpha Phi Alpha, the first African-American undergraduate fraternity. Since those early years, the university has continued to build on its legacy of innovation and diversity, and has been a place where both those with traditional values and those who value the unconventional find themselves equally at home. Cornell's distinguished faculty and dedicated staff genuinely contribute to the development of the next generation of leaders for America and the world. Its researchers make exciting discoveries in a multitude of academic disciplines and professional pursuits, from the practical and applied through the classical and theoretical. Cornell's faculty includes Nobelists and Pulitzer-prize winners, and its research foundation holds title to more than 760 foreign and U.S. patents. Cornell students come from all over the United States and the world and are among the brightest and most talented to be found. The same energy and enthusiasm can be found in Cornell's staff members, who are often leaders in their fields with professional connections and technical expertise sought both in their local communities and beyond the upstate New York area. University alumni-affairs, development, and public affairs staff members have worked to make Cornell one of the premier institutional advancement programs in the country, its dining facilities win national awards, and a number of staff are on the national boards of their professional organizations. A member of the Ivy League, Cornell has seven undergraduate and seven graduate schools and colleges, and has a mission to serve New York State as a land-grant institution, providing significant outreach throughout the state. It's an exciting place to be! Cornell is a learning community that seeks to serve society by educating the leaders of tomorrow and extending the frontiers of knowledge. A Vibrant CommunityCornell University is located in the heart of the beautiful Finger Lakes Region of New York State. The 745-acre campus overlooks what the Utne Reader dubbed the "most enlightened" city of Ithaca, nd is surrounded by an unspoiled, easily accessible environment of startling natural beauty. Ithaca was also voted the "best healthy city in the Northeast" in the September/October 2003 issue of Organic Style Magazine, by Rodale Press, who also gave it high ranking for culture and style. If you need a big-city fix, Manhattan is an easy 45-minute flight from our convenient airport (with handy connections to anywhere), and, at 220 miles away, is within four hours of travelling by car on scenic highways. Syracuse, Binghamton, and Rochester are all within 90 miles of Ithaca, and Toronto isn't much further than New York City. Tired of long commutes? Almost any sort of living is available within a 15-minute drive of campus - rural, suburban, historic downtown, and many more options. Cornell faculty and staff members enrich their local communities through involvement in a full range of activities, such as participation on school and community boards, volunteering with one of the many non-profit agencies, and social and political activism. Ideas and talents flourish with the diversity of experience and backgrounds (ethnic, national, religious) to be found here. "Foodies" will find themselves in paradise, with an enormous variety of top-quality restaurant experiences, from vegetarian to aged Angus beef, with multiple ethnic varieties. There are six first-rate public school districts in Tompkins County, one regional vocational school (BOCES), one parochial school, and three private schools, including a Montessori school. The Community School of Music and Arts provides private and group vocal, instrumental, and art instruction. Fifteen licensed child-care centers in the county, as well as 24 nursery schools and many after-school programs, provide a variety of care for infants, toddlers, and school-age children. Ithaca also has a Multicultural Resource Center that features book readings and social events, including a Latino dinner and dance. If that's not enough, there are almost daily performances of music and dance, from classical to Gamelan to jazz, from ballroom to tango to ballet. If you appreciate the change of seasons, you'll really love the area. In winter, you can downhill or cross-country ski, take a sleigh ride, or just curl up fireside. Our springs are bursting with color while nearby lakes and streams offer some of the best fishing in New York State. Summers are glorious with hiking, mountain biking, camping, boating and other activities. Autumn in upstate New York is spectacular with hillsides painted in reds, golds and oranges while more than sixty Finger Lakes wineries harvest the years' vintage.
