ABOUT THE COLLEGE
The College of New Jersey, the oldest of NJ's public colleges, has been recognized nationally in Money magazine, U.S. News & World Report, The Fiske Guide to Colleges, Barron's Profiles of American Colleges and Peterson's Competitive Colleges as one of the outstanding public colleges in the country. Founded in 1855 as the New Jersey State Normal School, The College of New Jersey has achieved national distinction for its academic and co-curricular programs and its highly selective admissions standards. Primarily residential and undergraduate with targeted graduate programs, TCNJ has approximately 5,900 undergraduate students, 900 graduate students, and 324 full time faculty, with a student to faculty ratio of 12:1. The beautiful 289-acre campus is located in suburban Ewing Township between Trenton and Princeton, and is convenient to Philadelphia and New York City, as well as the Jersey Shore and Pocono Mountains.
All members of the college community contribute to, benefit from, and mutually support a campus environment characterized by academic rigor, high standards, superior intellectual achievement, respect for diverse talents and perspectives, and expectations of exemplary academic and personal integrity. The College provides academically prepared students with a challenging undergraduate education, a rewarding residential experience, small classes, and a prestigious faculty. All college programs and activities are focused on the development of a citizenry that is well educated, intellectually inquisitive, and socially responsible.
The College of New Jersey is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. In addition, many of our undergraduate programs are accredited/approved by specialized, programmatic organizations.
SCHOOLS AND DEPARTMENTS
The College of New Jersey emphasizes the undergraduate experience. Academic programs are designed to provide students with an undergraduate education of exceptional quality. The College offers more than fifty liberal arts and professional programs through seven schools Art, Music and Media; Business; Culture and Society; Education; Engineering; Nursing; and Science.
The School of Art, Media & Music is comprised of two Departments: the Department of Art and the Department of Music.
The Department of Art offers majors in Art Education (secondary), Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Early Childhood Education/Art, and Elementary Education/Art. Minors offered include Art History and Fine Arts.
The Department of Music offers majors in Performance, Music Education (secondary), Early Childhood Education/Music, and Elementary Education/Music, as well as a minor in Music.
The School of Business offers undergraduate degrees in Accountancy; Business Administration with specializations in Finance, General Business, Information Systems Management, International Business, Management, and Marketing; Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Bachelor of Science in Economics. In addition, undergraduate minors are offered in Economics, Human Resource Management, International Business, Management and Marketing. Certificate programs for undergraduates include Human Resource Management and International Business.
The School of Culture and Society is composed of the following ten departments:
Department of African-American Studies offers an African-American Studies minor
Department of Communication Studies offers a major in Communications Studies and a minor in Media and Communication
Department of English offers majors in Early Childhood Education/English, Elementary Education/English, English, English Education (secondary), Professional Writing/Journalism. Minors offered include English, Professional Writing, and Journalism.
Department of History offers majors in Early Childhood Education/History, Elementary Education/History, History and History Education (secondary). A minor in History is also offered.
Department of Law and Justice offers majors in Law and Justice, Combined BS/MA and a minor in Law and Justice
Department of Modern Languages offers majors in Early Childhood Education/Spanish, Elementary Education/Spanish, Spanish, and Spanish Education (secondary). Minors are offered in French, German, Italian and Spanish.
Department of Philosophy and Religion offers a major in Philosophy and minors in Philosophy and Religion.
Department of Political Science offers a major in Political Science and minors in Political Science and Public
Administration.
Department of Psychology offers majors in Early Childhood Education/Psychology, Elementary Education/Psychology and Psychology. A minor in Psychology is also offered.
Department of Sociology and Anthropology majors are offered in Early Childhood Education/Sociology, Elementary Education/Sociology, Pre Social Work and Sociology. A minor in Sociology is also offered.
In addition, The School of Culture and Society is composed of the following three interdisciplinary programs: Classical Studies Program; International Studies Program; Women and Gender Studies Program.
The School of Education is composed of six departments, of which five participate in undergraduate education:
Department of Counselor Education (graduate only) accredited by CACREP in the following program areas: Community Counseling and School Counseling.
Department of Educational Administration and Secondary Education offers majors in Art Education (secondary); Biology Education (secondary); Chemistry Education (secondary); English Education (secondary); History Education (secondary)' Mathematics Education (secondary); Music Education (secondary); Physics Education (secondary); Spanish Education (secondary); Technology Education (secondary).
Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education offers majors in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education
Department of Health and Exercise Science major offered in Health and Exercise Science
Department of Language and Communication Sciences offers a minor in Communication Disorders
Department of Special Education offers major in Education of Developmentally Handicapped, Five-year dual certification in Deaf and Hard of Hearing/Elementary Education. Minor offered in Deaf Education.
The School of Engineering is composed of two departments:
Department of Engineering offers majors in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science
Department of Technological Studies offers majors in Technology Education, Elementary Education Math/Science/Technology, Early Childhood Education Math/Science/Technology, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Math/Science/Technology. A minor in Technology is offered.
The School of Nursing consists of two divisions:
Division of Professional Nursing Education and Practice (undergraduate) offers majors in Nursing and Nursing for RNs
Division of Advanced Professional Nursing Education and Practice (graduate) Majors: Master of Science in Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner, Master of Science in Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner for Certified NPs
The School of Science consists of:
Department of Biology majors offered in Biology Education (secondary), Biology Liberal arts, Early Childhood Education/Biology, Elementary Education/Biology, seven year BS/MD, and seven year BS/OD. Biology minor offered.
Department of Chemistry majors offered in Chemistry Education (secondary) and Chemistry Liberal Arts. Minor offered in Chemistry.
Department of Computer Science major and minor offered in Computer Science
Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers majors in Early Childhood Education/Mathematics, Elementary Education/Mathematics, Mathematics, mathematics Education (secondary), and Statistics. Minors offered in Mathematics and Statistics.
Department of Physics majors offered include Physics Liberal Arts, Physics Computational, Physics Earth Science, Physics Education (secondary). A minor is offered in Physics
FACILITIES
The College of New Jersey is a magnificent physical plant and owns more than 38 buildings. Many facilities have recently been constructed. A biology building was completed in the summer of 2000, a social sciences building opened in fall 2001 and a science complex that houses physics, chemistry and mathematics was completed in 2002. Recently completed buildings include the School of Business Building, and Paul Loser Hall, which houses admissions, the School of Nursing and offices for the Board of Trustees. In addition to 14 residence halls, TCNJ has constructed several new townhouse complexes for upper class students.
More construction in the planning stages includes a $25 million renovation to the library. The Roscoe L. West Library houses one of the largest and most comprehensive collections, with more than 500,000 volumes, over 1,300 periodicals, an extensive microfilm collection, and a state-of-the-art database-searching laboratory. Other campus facilities include 20 computer laboratories, television and radio studios, Kendall Hall Theater and studio theater, The College Art Gallery, a concert hall, and a full range of science and technology laboratories.
The College also has an impressive array of athletic facilities, including an Astro-turf stadium, outdoor/indoor tennis courts, a track, softball and baseball field and an aquatics center. TCNJ participates in NCAA Division III competition in 21 sports and also offers a full range of intramural and club sports.
