Truman State University, founded in 1867, is Missouri's only statewide public liberal arts and sciences university and the only public university in the state with highly selective admission standards.
For the ninth consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report has recognized Truman as the number one public university in the Midwest region - Master's category. They also rank Truman as the 8th best university in the Midwest region, among both private and public universities. Truman's curricula provide each student, regardless of intended specialization, with a foundation of knowledge appropriate to a traditional liberal arts and sciences education. It also requires major field specialization, providing each student with in-depth knowledge and mastery of a discipline. About 44 percent of Truman's graduates enter graduate and professional schools each year after graduation.
Truman's students consistently rank among the highest in their high school graduating classes. For example, the middle 50 percent of the
fall 2005 freshman class scored between 25 and 30 on the ACT, while the high school grade point average was a 3.75 on a 4.00 scale. In addition
to their academic abilities, more than 99 percent of the class had leadership roles in high school.
Truman's 6,000 students pursue degrees in 45 undergraduate and 6 graduate areas of study in 8 academic divisions.
Truman emphasizes high-quality teaching as its Number 1 priority. Truman students benefit from a 15:1 student/faculty ratio, which allows for greater one-on-one interaction. In addition to the classroom experience, about one-sixth of the University's undergraduate students engage in major research projects with faculty mentors outside the classroom each year.
