The Office of the Dean of the Undergraduate College at Bryn Mawr College requests applications for the newly created 12-month, full-time position of Director of Diversity, Social Justice and Inclusion. This position reports to the Assistant Dean and Director of Leadership and Community Development at Bryn Mawr and is a member of the college's undergraduate student life division. Founded in 1885, Bryn Mawr College is a private, highly selective institution with a long and proud tradition of excellence and rigor in scholarship that is committed to the values and goals of a liberal arts education. The undergraduate all-women student body numbers 1,300 and an additional 400 men and women are enrolled in the college's graduate programs. Undergraduates, faculty and staff work together in a community that is based on mutual respect, personal integrity and the standards of a social and academic Honor Code, with each generation of students creating and sustaining a self-governing society within the college. Bryn Mawr is a highly diverse institution, with approximately 44% of the undergraduate student body comprised of international students and students of color and close to 70% of students receiving financial aid. Bryn Mawr undergraduates are deeply committed to the principles of self-governance and exercise a remarkable degree of autonomy in the management of their collective residential and co-curricular experiences.
The Director of Diversity, Social Justice and Inclusion will be a staff member in The Pensby Center (formerly the Office of Intercultural Affairs) at Bryn Mawr College. The Pensby Center's chief goals are to help Bryn Mawr undergraduates affirm their identity/-ies, build community and cultivate leadership. These goals are achieved through active and meaningful engagement and partnerships among students, faculty, staff and alumnae.
Consistent with these goals, the Director of Diversity, Social Justice and Inclusion will be responsible for building significant engagement with students, staff and faculty, as well as student organizations, around issues of diversity, social justice and inclusiveness. S/he will collaborate with the Director of Leadership and Community Development, other college staff, faculty and students to initiate, coordinate, facilitate, review and revise Pensby Center programs.
Major areas of responsibility will include:
· Alliance of Multicultural Organizations: providing guidance to and maintaining regular communication with leaders of student affinity groups; planning and facilitating regular training, strategic planning and coalition-building workshops; awarding and monitoring funding to groups.
· Social Justice Partnership Program: providing administrative support to, and working in collaboration with, the SJPP committee and individual cohorts to develop and sustain a range of both proactive and responsive social justice conversations, programs and events.
· Web stewardship: keeping website current and increasing effectiveness of the Pensby Center and linked web sites. Maintaining connections and communication and promoting events through social media and course-management sites. Assisting with online applications for programs.
· Promoting The Pensby Center as a welcoming, active center that celebrates diversity, affirms identity and builds community.
Additional areas of contribution:
· Supporting the Assistant Dean and Director of Leadership and Community Development in overall operations of The Pensby Center, including budget and financial transactions, staffing, and event coordination.
· Participating in the management and coordination of the College's Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship program.
· Assuming leadership role in planning and presentation of annual events sponsored by The Pensby Center. Researching, selecting and promoting other speakers and events.
· Participating in the planning and delivery of seminars on diversity for first-year students.
· Collaborating with other staff in the training, engagement and ongoing work of the all-student Dorm Leadership Team, particularly the Community Diversity Assistants.
· Curating and encouraging the use of the college's multicultural libraries and other resources.
· Serving on the college's Diversity Council.
· Other duties as agreed upon by the Assistant Dean and Director of Leadership and Community Development and the Dean of the Undergraduate College.
Position requirements:
Applicants should have a master's degree and a minimum of three years of direct experience working with undergraduates in a college or university setting. This position requires an individual who has excellent interpersonal skills and who has demonstrated success engaging and collaborating with people representing diverse backgrounds and experiences. Strong writing and communication skills are also essential. The position requires someone who is detail-oriented and who possesses exceptional planning and organizational abilities. Experience working with international student populations is also desirable. Familiarity with website content management and development strongly preferred. Applicants must be able to work on projects independently or as a team member, as needed. S/he must also be willing to take on additional responsibilities in response to the college's strategic planning and any new initiatives that follow.
Compensation: Salary will be competitive and commensurate with education and experience. A comprehensive benefits package will be included.
