Duke University is seeking an Administrative Director to be
responsible for oversight of all administrative matters in the Duke
Institute for Genome Sciences & Policy (IGSP), including the
business, HR, computing resources and financial operations of the
IGSP, and to work with the IGSP Director to develop and implement
IGSP's strategic planning. This position operates with broad
authority and functions as a part of the Institute's executive
management team.
In partnership with the IGSP Director and faculty, the
Administrative Director will provide strategic recommendations on
all operational and strategic issues as they arise. Additionally,
the Administrative Director will also interact extensively with
program directors, faculty and staff in the IGSP and with
appropriate administrative officials across the University and
Medical Center.
Within the Department, the Administrative Director will be
responsible for all major operational and financial decisions,
freeing up the IGSP Director to focus on broader academic and
programmatic IGSP matters. Heads of administrative functions within
the IGSP (Finance, Human Resources, Communications, IT,
Development) will report to the Director.
Responsibilities:
- Advise the IGSP Director on strategic development and key
planning issues and make recommendations on major decisions.
- Keep the IGSP Director informed about activities, potential
challenges, opportunities, and recommended actions at both the
University and Medical Center.
- Shape and develop IGSP strategy and organization, while helping
to identify opportunities and challenges for the IGSP.
- Help determine resource allocations (financial and space) within
the IGSP.
- Manage budget annually and long-term.
- Encourage IGSP faculty, staff and trainees to evaluate and take
actions that are consistent with IGSP's overall strategy, which
will lead to high performance.
- Set performance goals, which are tailored to each IGSP
unit.
- Monitor IGSP performance to ensure that progress is being
made.
- Lead IGSP Core Resources Advisory Committee.
- Participate in management of various strategic entities within
the IGSP, as needed.
- Responsible for overseeing program development and
evaluation.
- Develop a group of well-rounded, capable managers in the
IGSP.
- Implement and maintain an effective Human Resources program to
build critical core competencies and organizational values.
- Coordinate within the context of other IGSP organizational
capabilities and help maintain an effective Educational program to
build genome sciences and policy training programs for
undergraduate, graduate and professional students.
Required Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Business Administration, Hospital
Administration, or a related field
- Significant professional management experience 12-15 years.
- Academic administration experience in a research setting,
preferably in the area of Genomics/Genetics.
- Experience with budget management (>$10 million).
- Must be an approachable, engaging team-builder with the ability
to successfully lead, plan and manage change.
- Superior communications and interpersonal and relationship
building skills that will serve as a resource to internal
constituents.
- Excellent follow-through skills with record for initiating action
and responding to constituents in a timely way.
- Propensity to go above and beyond, taking action that goes beyond
job requirements in order to achieve organizational
objectives.
