The Glassell School of Art Junior School is the nation´s only
museum art school for children ages 4 â?? 18. The Junior School
provides comprehensive art education, as well as hands-on
instruction in a variety of media, to over 3,500 students each
year. Situated in the teaching wing of the Museum of Fine Arts,
Houston, the Junior School offers a unique and comprehensive
approach to art appreciation whereby students can explore the
aesthetic and intellectual aspects of art appreciation while
engaging in hands-on art making and creative experiences. The
Junior School offers age-appropriate curricula in all varieties of
traditional and non-traditional media. The Junior School has a
strong relationship with the MFAH Education Department, and
programmatic relationships with various community organizations,
hospitals, schools and other non-profits in the Houston area.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for direction, development, and supervision of the
academic operations of the Glassell Junior School including:
Academic Management:
· Works with MFAH´s Education department to closely coordinate
programming within the matrix of educational offerings for children
and families, ensuring programming that meets the missions of both
areas, as well as providing unique programming experiences outside
of the MFAH Education department´s programming
· Focuses and facilitates Junior School´s educational mission
developing appropriate curriculum
· Hires, trains, and supervises faculty
· Works with faculty developing class descriptions and plans
· Teaches classes as needed
· Supervises scholarship programs and awards scholarships
Community Activities:
· Develops and maintains relationships with area schools and
organizations including managing existing programs with the
Presbyterian School and the School Art Committee of the Houston
Livestock Show & Rodeo
· Coordinates art programming on and off campus to meet community
needs actively works to increase visibility of the Glassell Junior
School and broaden its reach with new audiences
· Develops exhibitions for Junior School gallery and other
community sites in coordination with the MFAH Education department,
and in line with mission and programming of both the Junior School
and the MFAH Education department
Governance and Development:
· Works closely with the Chair of the Glassell Junior School
Subcommittee coordinating meetings and activities; reports to the
Executive and School Committee of the Glassell School as the
representative of the Junior School; serves on the Museum´s
Education committee
· In coordination with the MFAH Education department, works with
MFAH Development staff to secure funding for Junior School
activities and initiatives
· Works to develop long and short range planning for the Junior
School consistent with mission of both the Junior School and the
MFAH Education Department and to focus the Junior School into a
position of regional and national recognition for youth art
education
Program Management:
· Works with Administrative Dean on budgets, capital expenses,
faculty evaluation, and marketing activities
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
· Demonstrated excellence in curriculum planning and
execution
· Demonstrated excellence in teaching
· Excellent public speaking, verbal communication and
interpersonal skills
· Ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities
· Experience in managing budgets and long and short range
planning
Education and Experience:
· BA or BFA in Art, Art Education, or Art History required
· School or Program Administration experience preferred
· 5 years experience in elementary or secondary teaching
preferred
