PRESIDENT
The Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) Board of Trustees invites
nominations and applications for the position of president. The
next president will build on the impressive record of retiring
President Dr. Martha A. Smith, who has served AACC since 1994.
The president serves as the chief executive officer of the College,
reporting to the Board of Trustees. The president is responsible
for the day-to-day administration, management, leadership and
oversight over the operations of the College. The President works
with a wide range of internal and external constituents to lead,
support, and sustain the College's vision, philosophy, and mission,
as well as to advocate locally, regionally and nationally for the
distinctive community college mission.
With learning as its central mission, Anne Arundel Community
College has, for 50 years, responded to the needs of a diverse
community by offering high quality, affordable, and accessible
learning opportunities and is accountable to its stakeholders. The
college's nationally recognized and award-winning programs have
helped its more than 53,000 student's achieve their academic,
professional and family goals. AACC is a fully accredited, public,
two-year institution offering credit programs leading to an
associate degree, certificate or a letter of recognition. Students
may prepare to transfer to a four-year institution or prepare for
an immediate career. AACC also offers extensive lifelong learning
opportunities and noncredit, continuing education to those seeking
career training or retraining, working to boost basic skills or
pursuing new areas of interest. In addition to its main campus in
Arnold, AACC has degree centers at Arundel Mills, in Glen Burnie
and at centers and schools around the county. Anne Arundel
Community College at Arundel Mills in Hanover has been designated a
Regional Higher Education Center, one of seven such centers in
Maryland.
The College's already strong reputation has grown considerably and
remains on a positive trajectory. Named as Community College of the
Year by National Business Alliance in 2000, a Great
College to Work For by the Chronicle of Higher Education
in 2010 and 2011 and one of the Top Ten Community Colleges with
Foremost Use of Digital Technology by e.Republic's Center
for Digital Education and Converge magazine's 5th Annual
Digital Community Colleges Survey in 2009, AACC is on the leading
edge of curricular and organizational development and is a sought
after partner in entrepreneurial and innovative partnerships that
meet its mission and the needs of the local community. In September
2011, AACC was announced as the lead partner of a 10-college
consortium that will receive a $19.7 million Department of Labor
grant to provide training for high-demand jobs in science,
technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. AACC will help
develop programs for two of five key fields, cyber technology and
mechatronics. The first group of students is projected to begin
training in September 2012, with each new certificate designed to
take 9 to 12 months to complete. The certificate programs target
mainly workers who lost their jobs through changes in global
manufacturing. A STEM Bridge curriculum will incorporate remedial
education into the industry training curricula for those who need
to update fundamentals in English or math. Lessons will combine
online instruction with face-to-face classroom settings. These
certificates will be available for consortium partners and other
community colleges across the country.
AACC launched Student Success 2020 in 2009, a strategic plan
designed to help more of its students be successful in reaching
their educational goals. A top priority is doubling the number of
degrees, certificates and workforce credentials earned by AACC
students by the year 2020. Additional commitments are to: help all
students identify meaningful educational goals; build systems and
programs to track, monitor and support students; progress in
achieving their goals; involve faculty and staff in examining
current practices to identify potential vulnerabilities to
students' completing their goals; and make changes necessary to
increase students' success.
