Library Assignment: The George Washington University Libraries

Primary Location: Estelle and Melvin Gelman Library


Appointment Rank and Salary: Appointment at the rank of Librarian II (minimum salary $50,600). Rank and salary based on qualifications and experience.


The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) of The George Washington University (GW) is searching for an early to mid level career archivist to accession and process the records and collections specific to the history and operations of the University in all formats. The Archivist will work closely with the Library's digital initiatives staff for the preservation of electronic records and with staff in the Special Collections Research Center to plan for accessioning, processing and providing public services for these collections.


Responsibilities include developing and implementing a records strategy in support of the university's current operation and to document the university in the 21st century; analysis of the records; provision of intellectual control, including finding aids in EAD format; and overseeing all processing activities according to national standards for treatment of special and archival materials. This position is responsible for developing bibliographies and instructional materials; assisting in alumni and donor-related activities. With support the Archivist will plan and implement programs using historical records in support of teaching, research and current university operations and oversee the public service activities involving the University's historical collections. The position reports to the Director of the Special Collections Research Center.

Required: ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library and/or Information Science or a Master's degree in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Computer Science, Information Systems, Communications, Higher Education or comparable degree.
