Quantitative Reasoning Programme Faculty Positions
We are looking for three colleagues who can teach Quantitative
Reasoning (QR) through topic-based courses. The positions will be
in the University Scholars Programme (USP), a premier undergraduate
honours programme at the National University of Singapore, one of
Asia's leading research universities.
The three appointees will form the core of a team with the task of
developing QR as a required part of the foundations of USP's
curriculum. We are aiming for rigorous and intellectually
sophisticated courses, which focus more on quantitative approaches
in critical thinking than on the mathematical tools themselves.
Classes will be themed around a topic developed by the instructor,
but with common QR components across all courses. Our draft
template can be found here: http://www.usp.nus.edu.sg/quantitative/qrf-guidelines.html.
Two posts are non-tenure track lecturerships, normally contracted
for three years in the first instance and renewable indefinitely
subject to good performance. For the third post, there is the
possibility of a joint tenure-track position with an appropriate
department.
The normal teaching load is two sections or courses per semester
and classes are capped at 25 students. Although the majority of the
teaching will be QR, appointees will also have the opportunity to
develop and teach the occasional non-QR module in USP.
Candidates should hold a PhD or be ABD with the expectation of
completion by June 2012, and have prior experience teaching
undergraduates. Disciplinary specialty is open, but we are
especially interested in candidates who are active scholars in
their fields.
Remuneration and benefits are highly competitive.
We are looking for candidates who can begin in July 2012. Completed
applications received by the 31 December 2011 will receive full
consideration.
Interested applicants should submit their applications with a cover
letter; a resume; and a statement of the principles that underlie
their teaching. Shortlisted applicants will be asked to provide
further information and to make a campus visit. Please send
applications to uspbox24@nus.edu.sg or by mail to:

18 College Avenue East

Further questions about the position should be directed to
Professor John Richardson, Director, USP at uspbox24@nus.edu.sg
