Guidelines for Submissions
- Commentary articles should be written about issues of interest to a broad range of people. The approximately 80,000 subscribers to The Chronicle include academic administrators, faculty members, students, foundation personnel, officials of federal and state government agencies, legislators concerned with higher education, and others.
- Articles should adopt a clear point of view, not simply review both sides of a debate. In most cases, they benefit from the inclusion of specific recommendations for ways to solve the problems they outline.
- Articles should be written in a clear, informal style that is free of jargon and can be easily understood by all of our readers. We also caution writers to be careful to check, and have sources for, the factual information and quotations that they include in articles.
- Articles should be between 1,000 and 1,600 words, or approximately four to seven double-spaced, typed or printed pages. They should contain no subheads, footnotes, graphs, tables, or other illustrations.
- We acknowledge all submissions immediately with a postcard. The decision to accept or reject a manuscript rarely takes more than a month. We can return manuscripts only if they are accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed envelope.
- We edit all commentary pieces before they are published so that they conform to our editorial style and standards of readability. An author has an opportunity to review and approve the edited version of the manuscript before it appears in print. The editors of The Chronicle decide where and when the piece will be published in the paper. We send each author two copies of the issue in which the piece appears.
- Although we welcome unsolicited manuscripts, we do not consider multiple submissions. Nor do we accept commentary pieces that respond to Opinions or Points of View that we have published previously. Responses to such articles should be in the form of Letters to the Editor; letters of 500 words or less will be given priority.
- We do not use manuscripts that have been published elsewhere or manuscripts that another publication has accepted.
