Associate Publisher, Corporate Advertising
The Chronicle of Higher Education Inc. seeks an associate publisher for corporate clients to lead across all advertising and sales channels, including print, online, international and events. The associate publisher will:
- Define and develop the long-term sales strategy and goals for revenue growth from corporate clients.
- Provide strategic sales leadership and day-to-day management to an organization of approximately seven staff members responsible for selling and supporting advertising products and services to corporations. Foster a consultative selling culture that delivers effective integrated marketing solutions. Provide a high-energy, roll up the sleeves leadership style suitable to a lean and focused publishing company culture.
- Provide strong sales management, pipeline, performance metrics and prospecting efforts and process relative to new and existing clients and ad categories.
- Be responsible for the forecasting, budgeting, and P&L performance of the Sales group. Keep abreast of major account, industry sector, and competitive trends in Higher Education and philanthropy that affect marketing and ad spending.
- Build and maintain senior-level business relationships with current and prospective advertising decision-makers, industry influencers, and strategic partners domestically and globally.
The ideal candidate will:
- Be an experienced and innovative business-to-business sales leader who brings directly relevant category experience or the ability to learn and engage actively in the higher education and non-profit sector.
- Possess strong command of the principles of sales, strategic development, marketing, team building, management, planning, communications and interpersonal skills.
- Have demonstrated the ability to motivate, challenge and guide their team to seek out, understand and champion the needs of their market segments and external stakeholders to grow revenue share through market research, customer intelligence and innovative use of technology.
- Have a minimum of 10 years' sales experience in media publishing in print, online, sponsorships and events. Sales experience with leading national advertisers and agencies in the technology, financial, telecom, advocacy, higher education, consulting and related categories is desirable.

Director of Editorial Research
The Chronicle of Higher Education and The Chronicle of Philanthropy seek a Director of Editorial Research to expand our role as experts in higher education and philanthropy. The director will be responsible for developing and managing compelling and useful data for our newspapers and Web sites as well as new products. In collaboration with the newsrooms and business department the director will determine what surveys and data will be collected, in what format, in what form information will be published, and how it will be marketed. The director will be responsible for the accuracy and reliability of the data we produce, but his or her chief duty is to build a sound and financially successful operation.
In this newly created position, you will be expected to show an entrepreneurial bent and have the opportunity to create new information products to serve influential people in higher education, charities, foundations, as well as policy makers and the print and broadcast media.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with other Chronicle leaders to identify the best opportunities to tie the development and publication of data to our strategic goals as an organization.
- Identify editorial opportunities for data collection in higher education and philanthropy and determine priorities.
- Establish a process, timeline, and budget for acquiring and managing new data.
- Identify the technical platform for the collection, storage, and publication of our data to organize and streamline our resources, and to provide the most compelling product to readers.
- Oversee the current stable of signature surveys conducted by The Chronicles, including the Philanthropy 400 , Great Colleges to Work For, and surveys of executive compensation at both higher education and nonprofit institutions.
- Create new signature surveys.
- Manage staff members and make recommendations on staff resources needed to accomplish department objectives, including number and type of positions.
Determine systematic research methods to be used to ensure reliability and accuracy of data.
The ideal candidate will have experience working with large sets of data, and with most commonly-used software for collecting and analyzing data, including Excel, Filemaker, Crystal Reports, SAS, and SPSS. Additionally, an understanding of the way relational databases operate and an appreciation for how data is marketed is extremely important.
A bachelor's degree, preferably in statistics or a related field is required. The incumbent must have at least 5-10 years experience managing research and data projects or assisting in the gathering of data. Experience developing and integrating databases in a journalistic organization is preferred, as is experience supervising employees. Knowledge of higher education or philanthropy is a plus.
